Giveaway! Madame Tussaud: A Novel of the French Revolution by Michelle Moran

Madame Tussaud: A Novel of the French Revolution
by Michelle Moran

And the Winner is... Cheryl (CherylS22)! Congrats!

Thank you to EVERYONE who entered, tweeted, and blogged about this great giveaway!

The world knows Madame Tussaud as a wax artist extraordinaire…but who was this woman and how did she become one of the most famous sculptresses of all time? In these pages, her tumultuous story comes to life as only Michelle Moran could tell it. The year is 1788, and a revolution is about to begin…

Marie Tussaud has learned the secrets of wax sculpting by working alongside her uncle in their celebrated wax museum, the Salon de Cire. From her popular model of the American Ambassador, Thomas Jefferson, to her tableau of the royal family at dinner, Marie’s museum provides Parisians with the very latest news on fashion, gossip, even politics. Her customers hail from every walk of life, and when word arrives that the royals themselves are coming to see their
likenesses, Marie never dreams that the king’s sister will request her presence at Versailles as a royal tutor in wax sculpting. Yet when a letter with a gold seal is delivered to her home, Marie knows she cannot refuse—even if it means time away from her beloved Salon and her increasingly dear friend, Henri Charles.

As Marie becomes acquainted with her pupil, Princess Élisabeth, she is taken to meet both Marie Antoinette and King Louis XVI, who introduce her to the glamorous life at court. From lavish parties with more delicacies than she’s ever seen, to rooms filled with candles lit only once before being discarded, Marie steps into to a world entirely different from her home on the Boulevard du Temple, where people are selling their teeth in order to put food on the table.

Meanwhile, many resent the vast separation between rich and poor. In salons and cafés across Paris, people like Camille Desmoulins, Jean-Paul Marat, and Maximilien Robespierre are lashing out against the monarchy. Soon, there’s whispered talk of revolution…Will Marie be able to hold on to both the love of her life and her friendship with the royal family as France approaches civil war? And more importantly, will she be able to fulfill the demands of powerful revolutionaries who ask that she make the death masks of beheaded aristocrats, some of whom she knows?

Spanning five years from the budding revolution to the Reign of Terror, Madame Tussaud brings us into the world of an incredible heroine whose talent for wax modeling saved her life and preserved the faces of a vanished kingdom.

Courtesy of author Michelle Moran, and Crown Publishing, I have a SIGNED COPY of Madame Tussaud: A Novel of the French Revolution to GIVE AWAY! PLUS, Michelle is including a pair of Marie Antoinette cupcake earrings to the lucky winner!

Giveaway! Cake Boss by Buddy Valastro

Earlier this week I reviewed Cake Boss by Buddy Valastro and gave it 5 spoons! (Yes, I really loved the book!) It's a memoir, it's a book with great recipes from Carlo's Bakery, and it is a great read. Here's what Buddy writes on the back of the book...

Giveaway has ended! And the Winner is... Heidi V! Thanks to EVERYONE who entered, tweeted and blogged about the giveaway!

How I Became the Cake Boss

My story isn't my own; no real baker's is. They call me the Cake Boss, but that's just the latest chapter in my own story, which stretches back generations, all the way to my roots in Sicily. In this book, I tell the only-in-America story of my family's rise to success at Carlo's Bake Shop and of the father-son relationship at the heart of my journey. It's a story that combines immigrant struggle, family bonds, love, loss and as many hilarious memories as I could pack between two covers. If you like my show, or just sitting down to a good story (and learning a few secrets of the baking treade along the way), you'll love this book.

Of course, no book could be called Cake Boss without offering up the goods: at the end, you'll find thirty-seven recipes for Carlo's Bake Shop's most popular cookies, pastries, pies, cakes and cupcakes - along with tips and advice for creating these classics in your own home. I poured my heart into this book, and I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it.

Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantel gets released in Paperback! And Here's Your Chance to Win a Copy!

Wolf Hall Hits the Shelves in Paperback!

And The Winner is... Heather (hendy)! Congrats to Heather! And Thank you to EVERYONE who joined in on the fun!

Historical fiction fans are in for a treat - not only has Hilary Mantel's book Wolf Hall been released in paperback August 1st, but courtesy of Picador Publishers, one lucky Chick with Books reader from the US will win a copy!

Last year Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantel won the coveted Man Booker Prize. What exactly is The Man Booker Prize? The prize aims to reward the best novel of the year. Books eligible for the Man Booker prize must be written in English, but not by an author from the USA. Any citizen from the Commonwealth or The Republic of Ireland is eligible. The novel must be an original work in English (not a translation), full length and must not be self-published. And so, after much debate & reading, Wolf Hall came out the winner, and here's the synopsis...

England in the 1520s is a heartbeat from disaster. If the king dies without a male heir, the country could be destroyed by civil war. Henry VIII wants to annul his marriage of twenty years and marry Anne Boleyn. The pope and most of Europe opposes him. Into this impasse steps Thomas Cromwell: a wholly original man, a charmer and a bully, both idealist and opportunist, astute in reading people, and implacable in his ambition. But Henry is volatile: one day tender, one day murderous. Cromwell helps him break the opposition, but what will be the price of his triumph?

Learn more about Hilary Mantel at www.picadorusa.com, and while you're there read an excerpt of Wolf Hall. You can also connect with Hilary on her new Facebook page! And NOW you can enter to win a paperback copy of Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantel! Sorry, this giveaway is for USA residents Only... Here's How to Enter...

Into The Beautiful North by Luis Alberto Urrea... A Review & Giveaway!

Giveaway Has Ended!
Congrats to Cindy, Dawn and Krystal!

It's a story of a small dusty Mexican town where electricity was too modernizing for some of the residents of Tres Camarones, the peso was almost worthless, and there was no work. The town seemed to be slowly disintegrating... and then the men left to go north... to find work... making Tres Camorones easy prey for the banditos, the drug dealers, to settle in and take over the town... But our 19 year old heroine Nayeli has other ideas...

From the Publisher...Nineteen-year-old Nayeli works at a taco shop in her Mexican village and dreams about her father, who journeyed to the US when she was young. Recently, it has dawned on her that he isn't the only man who has left town. In fact, there are almost no men in the village--they've all gone north. While watching The Magnificent Seven, Nayeli decides to go north herself and recruit seven men--her own "Siete Magníficos"--to repopulate her hometown and protect it from the bandidos who plan on taking it over.

Into The Beautiful North by Luis Alberto Urrea is wonderful. The prose flows easily and paints a vivid portrait of hot dusty roads and the people who live near them. The sprinkling of Spanish among the narrative also gives the landscape authenticity. Tres Camarones, where the story begins, is where we meet our heroine Nayeli, who works in the little restaurant The Fallen Hand Taco Shop, her best friends Yolo, who works as a pin tender at a 3 lane bowling alley, and Vampi, who works as a shrimp peeler and is the only "goth" girl in the little Mexican town. We are immediately caught up in their friendship and their simple pleaures of life. On first thought, the town seems like a deadend, hopeless. But the girls and the other women surrounding them breathe life in this town and into the story. We meet Tia Irma, a feisty woman who was running to replace the Municipal President (she had after all leadership experience as the Sinoloa's retired Lady Bowling Champion), Nayeli's hypochondriac mother Maria, and of course Tacho, the owner of The Fallen Hand who was gay.

When banditos threaten to take over the little town, 19 year-old Nayeli along with Yolo, Vampi and Tacho, with the idea of The Magnificent Seven fresh in Nayeli's head, go in search of help. It is that journey, which is truly more of a journey of self discovery than just over the boarder that makes this book special.

The narrative is what moves the story along, and it is honest, fresh and enjoyable. There were many issues that came to mind as I read Into The Beautiful North such as immigration, small town life, and deciding to pursue ones dreams no matter what. A perfect pick for a reading group because of the questions this book stirs. Luis Alberto Urrea suggests topics for a book club to discuss on his website:

*Immigration
*Choices faced by young people in Mexico
*Life-changing road trips
*Friendships between young women
*How movies inspire our actions
*The power of a postcard
*Small town Mexico as mirrored in small town America
*Does midwestern America seem "magic realist" to small town Mexico?
*The growing power of women in Mexico
*The Seven Samurai/Magnificent Seven

If you enjoy friendships, small towns and great narrative, wrap yourself in Into The Beautiful North by Luis Alberto Urrea. It's one of my favorite reads this year!

A Story of Love, Loss, Sacrifice & Obsession... AND another Great Giveaway for Chick with Books Blogoversary Celebration Day 3!

A Story of Love, Loss, Sacrifice and Obsession...
AND another great Giveaway for Chick with Books Blogoversary Celebration...

And the winner is... Helen of California! Congrats to Helen! And Thank you to EVERYONE who Entered, Tweeted and Blogged about the Giveaway!

Last summer there was a lot of buzz about a new author by the name of Emily St. John Mandel. Her debut novel was called Last Night in Montreal. I was in for a big treat because Caitlin of Unbridled Books sent a copy my way to read! The characters were so rich, and I was immediately drawn into the story. It was hypnotizing... It was like a jigsaw puzzle of people and places... and it was wonderful! Here's what I wrote about Last Night in Montreal when I reviewed it last July...

In the opening line of the book we read “ No one stays forever” and with this we begin unraveling the mystery behind Lilia... We first meet Lilia casually walking out the door of her apartment going for the paper never to return. She leaves behind Eli, who starts to notice the time and wonders where she is... then desperately realizes that she’s gone... her only mark on the apartment they share, a polaroid photograph of her when she was twelve, neatly removed from above the headboard.... From here we are thrown into Lilia’s life before Eli, as she was growing
up, constantly on the move with her father, changing names & identities, moving from state to state on an adventure of a lifetime, starting with a early morning ‘abduction’ in a snowy driveway, from a home she had known for 7 years into the arms of a recognizable stranger, bandages on her arms...

In a refreshing style, Emily St. John Mandel moves from present to past (and back again) from chapter to chapter with incredible continuity. Writing the story moving back and forth in time kept my attention. And made it so interesting! How parts of stories lead into other stories was amazing sometimes. The bits of information that were dropped like crumbs thru the story made me keep turning those pages to learn more. There are really 3 stories here, the story of young Lilia’s abduction and wanderings, the story of the detective who sacrifices his life looking for her, and the story of how everything in the past connects to the present day and how it all comes together in the end. The story rushes forward until the present and the past collide in Montreal....

With rich characters that are so human, so believable, so sad, I was drawn into their story. Their histories well developed. The writing done well. A story of love, loss, sacrifice and obsession. The story is moving. I recommend you pick it up and read it! You will enjoy it! (You can read the complete review to learn more about the book)

Unbridled Books joins the celebration by sponsoring a great giveaway for a copy of Last Night in Montreal by Emily St. John Mandel for a U.S. reader of Chick with Books! Unbridled Books is dedicated to publishing high-quality works that are moving, beautiful, and surprising. Their name, Unbridled Books, was chosen to represent a publishing venture that is both energetic and independent. Thanks Caitlin and Unbridled Books for joining in on the festivities! Seduced By A Rogue Blog Tour & Review

Be Seduced By A Rogue...
And Enter the World of 14th Century Scotland and Amanda Scott!

A fair-haired beauty at 19, Lady Mairi is heiress apparent to her father Lord Dunwythie's rich barony. He has carefully taught her how to manage their estates, but a feud between his clan and the Maxwell clan is brewing as the two families edge toward a clan war - their dispute over money owed. Mairi's father believes he owes nothing, and of course Mairi sides with him.

When the impulsive and blue-eyed Rob Maxwell chances to meet Mairi in a barley field, they feel instant attraction, despite their families' antagonisms. Knowing he must put his clan first, Rob enacts a plan to force Dunwythie to pay his debt: Rob kidnaps Mairi, making the abduction appear the work of a stranger; then he and his sheriff-brother offer to help Dunwythis rescue his daughter IF, and only if, he will pay them the monies due. Yet after Rob captures Mairi's body, she captures his heart. When Dunwythie summons the aid of the most powerful clan in all Scotland (the Douglases), clan-tensions rise to a fever pitch. Love takes its own feverish course, as Mairi and Rob join forces to prevent a clash between hot-headed clans, and to protect their budding love.

What did I think?... Seduced by a Rogue is enchanting! The characters were rich and likeable. The setting in Scotland was wonderful with authentic touches of language and scenery. You can tell that Amanda knows her history, especially when writing of the intricacies of the clans. At the beginning of the story Amanda writes in her Author's Note explaining some of the language and some of the references that the reader may not be familiar with, but these touches are what allows us to travel back in time to experience the world of Lady Mairi Dunwythie in the 14th century. The romance between Lady Mairi and the clan warrior Robert Maxwell starts at a slow boil and finally sizzles! Plus Amanda has a wonderful sense of humor- I found myself smiling out loud at some of the wonderful situations between Mairi & Rob. I love historical romances and Seduced By A Rogue is a terrific read. Amanda is a wonderful storyteller!

About Amanda... Amanda Scott, best-selling author and winner of the Romance Writers of America's RITA/Golden Medallion and The Romantic Times' awards for Best Regency Author and Best Sensual Regency, began writing on a dare from her husband. She has sold every manuscript she has written. More than twenty-five of her books are set in the English Regency period (1810-1820), others are set in fifteenth-century England and sixteenth-and eighteenth-century Scotland. Three are contemporary romances. Learn more about Amanda at Hachette Book Group HERE! And here's a link to Amanda's homepage where you can check out ALL her books!

Giveaway: The Lost Dog by Michelle de Kretser

Giveaway : The Lost Dog by Michelle de Kretser

The Giveaway has ended! Winners have been notified by email, so check your email to see if you won! Thanks to everyone who joined in on the fun and entered the giveaway! The winners will be announced here when I hear back from everyone!

About the Book...
Tom Loxley, an Indian-Australian professor, is less concerned with finishing his book on Henry James than with finding his dog, who is lost in the Australian bush.

Joining his daily hunt is Nelly Zhang, an artist whose husband disappeared mysteriously years before Tom met her. Although Nelly helps him search for his beloved pet, Tom isn't sure if he should trust this new friend.

Tom has preoccupations other than his book and Nelly and his missing dog, mainly concerning his mother, who is suffering from the various indignities of old age. He is constantly drawn from the cerebral to the primitive--by his mother's infirmities, as well as by Nelly's attractions. THE LOST DOG makes brilliant use of the conventions of suspense and atmosphere while leading us to see anew the ever-present conflicts between our bodies and our minds, the present and the past, the primal and the civilized.

About the Author...
Michelle de Kretser was born in Sri Lanka and emigrated to Australia when she was fourteen. She was educated in Melbourne and Paris and has worked as an editor and a book reviewer. The Lost Dog is her third novel. It was a finalist for the Commonwealth Writers Prize and received the 2008 Christina Stead Prize for fiction. Like to learn a little more about Michelle? You can find more info at her author page at Hachette Book Group.

I've read quite a few good reviews for this book... "Filled with luminous writing and startlingly wise observations, this is also a funny, moving and a beautiful contemporary Australian love story and a juicy mystery all at once." and I'm looking forward to reading it and reviewing it myself! In the meantime, I have 5 copies of The Lost Dog to Give Away courtesy of Valerie of Hachette Book Group!

The Night Gardener ... A Murderous Giveaway!

It's a GIVEAWAY for The Night Gardener
A thriller of the murderous kind by legendary writer George Pelecanos!

I have 3 copies of The Night Gardener by George Pelecanos to giveaway to my readers! A BIG thank you to Valerie of Hachette Book Group for making this possible!! George Pelecanos has written 15 crime novels set in and around Washington, D.C. "Bigger and even more unstoppable than his previous thrillers, George Pelecanos achieves in The Night Gardener what his brilliant career has been building toward: a novel that is a perfect union of suspense, character and unstoppable fate."

From Publishers Weekly:
Pelecanos delivers a dignified, character-driven epic that succeeds as both literary novel and page-turner. In 1985, the body of a 14-year-old girl turns up in a Washington, D.C. park, the latest in a series of murders by a killer the media dub "The Night Gardener." T.C. Cook, the aging detective on the case, works with a quiet, almost monomaniacal, focus. Also involved are two young uniformed cops., Gus Ramone, who's diligent, conscientious and unimpressed by heroics, and Dan "Doc" Holiday, an adrenaline junkie who's decidedly less straight.

Fast Forward 20 years. Detective Ramone, now married with kids of his own, investigates the murder of one of his teenage son's friends. The homicide closely resembles the earlier unsolved Night Gardener murders. Holiday, now an alcoholic chauffeur and bodyguard, follows the case on his own and tracks down Cook, long retired but still obsessed with the original murders. While the three work together toward a suspenseful ending, Pelecanos emphasizes the fallacy of "solving" a murder and explores the ripple effects of violent crime on society.
