The Art of Devotion by Samantha Bruce-Benjamin... A Blog Tour & Review!

Have we all not wished to keep forever the one person we love the most?

Author Samantha Bruce-Benjamin loves readers and would be happy to answer any questions you may have for her! Just ask away in the comment section!

The Art of Devotion by Samantha Bruce-Benjamin is haunting... The prose is beautifully rendered on the page, like a love letter written to the reader... The women who fill the pages of The Art of Devotion struggle for your empathy as each reveals their hidden fears, betrayals, hopes and obsessions... and by the end of the story, their story, we are swept up into their lives.

From the Publisher...In the tradition of Rebecca and Atonement, Samantha Bruce-Benjamin’s brilliant and timeless debut unveils the dark side of human nature as four women share the poignant tale of love, obsession, and ultimate betrayal that binds them forever. Filled with secrets, love, betrayal, obsession, and deceit, THE ART OF DEVOTION is a beautifully rendered window into one family’s dark and complex history. Told from the shifting points of view of four women, the story explores the psychological effects and emotional damage within a family led by a matriarch who was tragically widowed too soon; the fragile, almost inappropriately close relationship between her son and daughter; and the reckless deceit of an outsider...

The secluded beaches of a sun-drenched Mediterranean island are the perfect playground for young Sebastian and Adora. Emotionally adrift from their mother, Adora shelters her sensitive older brother from the cruelties of the world. Sophie does not question her children’s intense need for one another until it’s too late. Her beloved son’s affections belong to Adora, and when he drowns in the sea, she has no one else to blame.

Still heartbroken years later, Adora fills her emptiness with Genevieve, the precocious young daughter of her husband’s business associate and his jealous wife, Miranda. Thrilled to be invited into the beautiful and enigmatic Adora’s world, the child idolizes her during their summers together. Yet, as the years progress, Genevieve begins to suspect their charmed existence is nothing more than a carefully crafted illusion. Soon, she too is ensnared in a web of lies.

What Did I Think?... The Art of Devotion is beautifully written. The prose is poetry, flowing easily as you read,

"For each of us, there is a moment: what we see at the last, before God closes our eyes forever; an entire existence distilled to one perfect memory. We anticipate its promise all our lives."

The novel itself is unique in that the story is told from four points of view. Sophie, Adora, Miranda and Genevieve are the three generations of women that tell their story, unfolding it by alternating passages, almost like pages in a diary. At first I thought that having the four alternating narrators was just to establish the beginning of the story and the voices of the different women, but as the story continued that way, I found it an interesting way to read a story. Instead of having to guess the motivations of one of the other women involved in a particular circumstance, I was able to peek into their thoughts soon enough when it was their turn to "speak". The characters are fleshed out and well developed, and the empathy you will start to feel for them individually is the result of their lives coming to life on the page. Samantha Bruce-Benjamin does a wonderful job creating such strong believable women. And their lives are so entangled with one another too! There is more than one twist and turn to their stories. Secret liaisons and relationships are slowly revealed over the course of the novel, along with betrayals, that will having you devouring the pages for more!

The setting for the novel is the beautiful Mediterranean, and the story has that carefree feeling to it. We are allowed to enjoy the women and not be concerned with the mundane of day-to-day living. The interactions between Sophie, Adora, Miranda and Genevieve are steeped in deep emotion, spanning 20 years of their lives, from young girls (in the case of Adora, Miranda and eventually Genevieve) to mature women, and the results are haunting. Even after finishing the book I am still thinking about those women and the choices they made. Not to give too much away, but the prologue meant so much more to me after I finished the book, and I would recommend going back and reading it again after you finish too!

I would definitely recommend The Art of Devotion by Samantha Bruce-Benjamin! For it's beautiful writing, memorable characters and its intriguing story. And those 4 women were so interesting to get to know!

9 Dragons by Michael Connelly... Blog Tour & Review

All his life Harry Bosch believed he had a mission. He needed to build his life so that he was invulnerable, so nothing and no one could ever get to him....
All that changed...

LAPD Detective Harry Bosch is off the chain in the fastest, fiercest, and highest-stakes case of his life. Fortune Liquors is a small shop in a tough South L.A. neighborhood, a store Bosch has known for years. The murder of John Li, the store's owner, hits Bosch hard, and he promises Li's family that he'll find the killer.

The world Bosch steps into next is unknown territory. He brings in a detective from the Asian Gang Unit for help with translation--not just of languages but also of the cultural norms and expectations that guided Li's life. He uncovers a link to a Hong Kong triad, a lethal and far-reaching crime ring that follows many immigrants to their new lives in the U.S.

And instantly his world explodes. The one good thing in Bosch's life, the person he holds most dear, is taken from him and Bosch travels to Hong Kong in an all-or-nothing bid to regain what he's lost. In a place known as Nine Dragons, as the city's Hungry Ghosts festival burns around him, Bosch puts aside everything he knows and risks everything he has in a desperate bid to outmatch the triad's ferocity.

Today is the official release date of 9 Dragons by Michael Connelly! Detective Harry Bosch is back for his 15th appearance to enter into a culture and a country he's unfamiliar with, which makes for some great reading! Michael Connelly writes about real places and it's fascinating! Meet the Triads, a kind of Asian Mafia, whose origins date back to the seventeenth century. 113 monks in the Shaolin monastery, Buddhist monks, were killed by Manchu invaders. There were 5 remaining monks that created the secret society known as the triads with the goal of overthrowing the invaders. The goals of the triads had changed a bit over time and now while the Asian shop owners pay the extortion as a way to honor the ghosts of the slaughtered monks, the shop owner from Fortune Liquors didn't pay for some reason and that's why Harry is looking over his dead body...

But we see a different side of Harry in 9 Dragons... we finally meet a grown-up Maddie, his thirteen year old daughter who lives with her mother, a former FBI agent, in Hong Kong... and we see Harry race to Hong Kong to save his daughter from what appears to be the clutches of the Triad while trying to solve the murder of Mr. Li, the owner of Fortune Liquors, and someone who Harry feels saved his life a long time ago. Maddie has never complicated Harry's life. He didn't raise her, but visited her in Hong Kong and she visited him in L.A. But she made him vulnerable... She was precious to him... In 9 Dragons she disappears...

Michael Connelly was a crime reporter before beginning his novel writing and his mastery of the subject shows. His crime novels are page turners that add great characters, great locations, and realistic scenarios. 9 Dragons is no different. Tag along with Harry as he navigates L.A.'s Asian gangs,Hong Kong, his colleagues (who he doesn't really trust), and his former lover to solve the murder and save his daughter. If you're a Harry Bosch fan you won't be disappointed. If you've never met Harry, don't worry, you don't need to read the other books to enjoy this one!

How it Ends by Laura Wiess... Blog Tour

how it ends
true love reveals it all...

Laura Wiess talks about how she came about writing how it ends, and I think it describes perfectly the feelings that haunted me after turning the last page...

At the beginning of the story we meet a very young Hanna, whose parents asked the next door neighbor Helen to take care of her during those times that Hanna needed refuge from a home that wasn't a place for a little girl to be. Helen became Grandma Helen and a bond was formed when a small sad little girl asked if "she was going away too?" And Grandma Helen answered that she would never leave her and her & Grandpa Lon's house became her safe haven. A place for chocolate chip pancakes, and homemade carrot cake, walks in the woods, and honest talks about anything that came to mind.... it was wonderful to read the first chapter and see how the bond between Hanna and Grandma Helen was formed... but as time passed, and Hanna grew up a bit, she spent less and less time at Grandma Helen's. Hanna was a teenager, dealing with boys and partying, and her growing sexuality- all the things that a teenager thinks is important at the time. She wants Seth, but once she's finally got him, things aren't as perfect as she had thought they would be. He treats her terribly! She turns to the one person she always has had for advice and comfort, but Helen isn't that person anymore. She's terminally ill and unable to speak or interact. Hanna decides she'll fulfill her community service requirement by spending time with Helen (something that would never would have been a chore before, but Helen's illness is so upsetting to Hanna). They start to listen to an audiobook that Helen had out, and Hanna is drawn into the story of real love & passion. Something she had wondered if true love could really exist. The story is is about a love between two people who cling to each other for survival, and then because of a deep and satisfying love. Feelings awaken in Hanna... and then the story becomes "too real...."

Laura Wiess did a wonderful job of writing this story within a story. Each chapter is either Hanna or Helen "speaking" to us, and eventually the audiobook becomes it's own separate chapters. I like these "alternate" voice chapters because it gives us insights into the thoughts of each of the characters pertaining to a particular event. Laura Wiess also knows how to write about teenage angst! You can feel Hanna's pain as she grows up, matures and comes to realize things that only a mature young lady can see.

The book was wonderful and sad at the same time. It will make you reflect about the people in your life that you may pass by every day without a thought....

Laura Wiess is the author of the critically acclaimed novels Such a Pretty Girl, chosen as one of the ALA’s 2008 Best Books for Young Adults and 2008 YALSA Quick Picks for Reluctant Readers, and Leftovers. Originally from Milltown, New Jersey, she traded bumper-to-bumper traffic, excellent pizza, and summer days down the shore for scenic roads, bears, no pizza delivery, and the irresistible allure of an old stone house surrounded by forests in Pennsylvania’s Endless Mountains Region. Learn more about Laura at from her author page at Simon & Schuster. And a big thank you to Sarah of Pocket Books for sharing the review copy of how it ends with me! Last Light Over Carolina by Mary Alice Monroe
It's a Blog Tour!

In LAST LIGHT, New York Times bestseller Monroe tells the haunting and touching story of a longtime shrimp boat captain and his wife of thirty years the day his boat goes missing at sea. Pat Conroy once said that “every book that Mary Alice Monroe has written has felt like a homecoming to me,” and Anne River Siddons wrote that “Monroe’s voice is strong and true.” Now, once again, Monroe brings the South to life with a lyrical and evocative story about past mistakes and second chances.

Mary Alice Monroe writes stories about real people. In Last Light Over Carolina we meet Bud Morrison, his wife Carolina and the family & people of a small shrimping community in South Carolina. These are hard working people trying to survive living and working the life that generations of their families have. They are shrimpers. The men work long hours to provide for their families. The women support them, wait for them, cook for them. There are strong bonds in the community and a deep love for ones family. Central to the story is the story of Bud & Carolina- their love and commitment to each other after 30 years of marriage. When tragedy strikes we are taken back in flashbacks to happier times and memories of times long ago. We also see how a community pulls together in the present. Her writing has gained added purpose and depth with her move to the South Carolina Lowcountry. "Living on Isle of Palms provides a stimulating place for me to think and to write. I've always been interested in nature, but living on the island and near the wetlands has influenced my work. I draw themes for my novels from nature and the parallels with human nature. And, in my own small way, I hope that by bringing to life the beauty and mystery of this fabulously varied ecosystem and various endangered species in my stories, readers will be inspired to support efforts to protect them." The Castaways by Elin Hilderbrand Blog Tour!

The Castaways by Elin Hilderbrad
Get lost in a good summer read!

About the Book...
"Greg and Tess MacAvoy are one of four prominent Nantucket couples who count each other as best friends. As pillars of their close-knit community, the MacAvoys, Kapenashes, Drakes, and Wheelers are important to their friends and neighbors, and especially to each other. But just before the beginning of another idyllic summer, Greg and Tess are killed when their boat capsizes during an anniversary sail. As the warm weather approaches and the island mourns their loss, nothing can prepare the MacAvoy's closest friends for what will be revealed...."

Right from the start, when we look at the cover of the book, we are prepared for sandy beaches and lazy days on the island of Nantucket... Find a comfortable place and settle in for a good story! One of friendship, grief & forgiveness... sprinkled with secrets and lies... Everything is tightly woven together so we can wrap ourselves into the story of Greg & Tess, The Chief & Andrea, Addison & Phoebe, Jeffery & Delilah. Elin Hilderbrand moves back and forth in the story to show us how the friendships of our 4 main couples developed and how some of their lives were intertwined before they were the couples they became... Their relationships were complicated and became more so after the tragic death of Tess & Greg, who made up part of "The Castaways" the nickname the couples gave themselves as they vacationed together, laughed together and lived in the wake of each others lives. Elin really lets us get to know the characters as we read about their desires and fears in relationship to themselves, their spouse and the others. Each character has a "speaking" part in the book as the story develope's and we see each characters perspective. Almost like taking a peak at a diary. Her writing is great! The characters feel real! A perfect summer read! I enjoyed it immensely! Want to learn more? Here's the link to The Castaways.Thank you Miriam of Hachette Book Group for a copy of this wonderful book to review!
